Bangladesh national team’s spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi said their spinners need to adapt to different conditions and mindset in order to get success in the Test matches away from home.
Tigers bowlers experienced a torrid day in the longest format as they conceded over 700 runs against New Zealand while picking up just six wickets at Seddon Park in Hamilton in the first innings of the first Test of the two-match series.
“They batted really well and we have to face it. We need to change our mindset on how to play in this part of the world, especially in Test cricket. You all know that we are a very competitive side in the white-ball cricket. But to really get into the competitions, we need to adapt to these conditions and the mindset as well,” said the former India spinner.
Young spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who has produced some outstanding performances at home in his short career so far, faced a harsh reality check in alien conditions as he leaked 246 runs in 49 overs, his highest in a 19-Test career.

But Joshi backed his young bowler and said he has the capacity to become a great bowler with experience.
Joshi, who played 15 Tests for India, mentioned two of his legendary spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh as they ascended to zenith after struggling early in their career.
“It’s all challenges for the bowler. Especially Miraz, he is a young star. He will learn throughout the years. We have seen some of the bowlers’ names on the list. Harbhajan we have seen, we have seen Anil, and we have seen quite a lot of players who have struggled. So obviously we have to give that much leverage to our young bowler. I am sure he will come out successful,” said the 48-year old.
Bangladesh batsmen could not survive the first day but their bowlers had to toil in the next two days without much success.

The Indian thinks keeping discipline is the key to getting success in these sorts of conditions.
“When you bowl to the top-order batsmen on a first day pitch, you need to be very disciplined. As a finger spinner you don’t have much choice on the first day pitch. So you need to bowl right areas, hitting good length and be consistent and give support to the first bowling options.
“Our spinner needs to adapt to the conditions and situation. You need to change you mindset about how you progress in these venues,” said Joshi.
The coach said he has no complaints about the preparation for the series but he also informed that individual players have the responsibility as well with regards to adaptation.
“If you look at the conditions and what we use at home, you need to have e good preparation. If you look at the preparation coming into this tour, all the national team players were playing in the BPL. I am not blaming that. But they did not have the ideal preparation. We are not complaining about that. Again depends on individual. You look at Tamim [Iqbal], what Tamim did, he adapted to the conditions, right? It’s again upto the players, individual players, how you take it, how you prepare yourself, how you change your mindset,” said Joshi.
