Bangladesh head coach Steve Rhodes said he would love to see some more involvement of local cricketers during rare and game-changing incidents such as the Super Over in the sixth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League.
In the history of the BPL there has only been one occasion where there was a Super Over and it was this season in the match involving Khulna Titans and Chittagong Vikings at Mirpur.
During the super over between Khulna and Chittagong, all the players involved in batting and bowling for Khulna were overseas while Chittagong used only Mushfiqur Rahim as a batsman and the other three player were overseas.
Rhodes hoped that at least one Bangladeshi batsman would open in the Super Over. For the Vikings, it was the South African duo of Robbie Frylinck and Cameron Delport batting while for the Titans, it was the Pakistani Junaid Khan bowling. And then for Khulna, it was West Indian Carlos Brathwaite and English Dawid Malan batting while Frylinck bowled for Chittagong.
“I think when we get to the Super Over I would like some sort of Bangladeshi involvement from our players because there may be a time in a T20 World Cup when we desperately need some experience in Super Overs. Also, if they get brought in 50-over competitions, who knows, to finish and make a decider who wins that match. So, one of the changes I would love to happen is that each team, the Super Over has to be bowled by a Bangladeshi,” Rhodes said during a press conference at Sylhet International cricket stadium on Friday.

“That would make it very interesting because it would be a major factor regarding the very start of the tournament; who you select in your squad, because the likes of a Taskin (Ahmed), an (Abu Haider) Rony or a Mustafizur (Rahman) -- people who can bowl that last over – then they will be getting picked and being played all the time because they will be able to bowl that Super Over for you. And also, one batsman – one of the openers – has to be a Bangladeshi so that they get the experience of playing in the Super Over. A little bit different, bit left-field, but you can see my reasoning is that I am desperate for Bangladeshi players to experience all aspects of cricket and Super Overs are here to stay I feel, they are very exciting,” Rhodes concluded.
