Joshi wants changed mindset away from home

The former India spinner sees the victory in Mirpur Sunday as another evidence of Bangladesh’s good run at home, and that the main challenge now remains in away matches

Bangladesh spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi is happy with the way his side registered a dominating five-wicket win to begin the three-match ODI series against the West Indies.

The former India spinner sees the victory in Mirpur Sunday as another evidence of Bangladesh’s good run at home, and that the main challenge now remains in away matches.

Bangladesh saw drastic improvements, particularly in white-ball cricket, over the past few years.

The wins however, have come mostly at home with the advantage of the conditions and crowd support.

The Tigers since 2015 have played 27 ODIs at home, winning 20 times, but away from home, the side have only been able to win 12 matches off the 32 played.

Within the same time span, Bangladesh in 15 Test matches at home have won five, while the side were able to bag only one victory away from home, having played nine game in the longer-version.

In T20Is, Bangladesh had a mere seven wins off 25 matches played abroad, while at home, the Tigers registered seven victories in 16 games.

“I think conditions are always tough when you go away from home. And especially for the spinners. You need to adapt to the conditions and need to change your mind-set and change it every format of the game. When you play red-ball your mind-set is different, when you play white-ball cricket your mind-set is different,” said Joshi to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Monday.

Joshi is also elated with the spinners doing their job well, and doesn’t see anything wrong relying on the team’s strengths.

However, as a coach, he would like to see a change in mindset when the team are playing abroad.

“I’m wearing a coaching cap now but I am a player as well. So I always think, as a player, what a spinner needs is the mindset. We have seen Taijul [Islam]. He plays only one format, and has been very successful simply because he focuses, he puts in that extra effort in practice and in the match as well,” said Joshi.

“We have seen Miraz [Mehedi Hasan], who has been consistent probably from the last two years. And of course Shakib [al Hasan], you know, the master is there. So, we don’t have much challenges (at home) because the challenge comes only when we go outside. Probably I would look at changing the mindset when we go away from home, adapting to the condition and adapting to those batsmen, it’s a challenge. That I’m trying to share with the players,” the former left-arm spinner added.
