Tigers captains shocked, refuse to comment on coach

Update : 13 Nov 2017, 08:31 PM
Confusion and uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh cricket team head coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s resignation has turned into a major issue in the cricket arena. Hathurusingha is scheduled to return to Dhaka this week. Whether he will return to the helm of the national team’s coaching post or not, and if he does stick to his decision to resign then who will be his successor, all these gossips are being discussed among the Bangladesh cricket fans. Earlier, reports emerged that Hathurusingha submitted his resignation letter to the BCB amid speculation of taking over the responsibility of Sri Lanka as the head coach. Later, the BCB president Nazmul Hasan informed in a press conference Thursday that they will not force him to stay. Mashrafe bin Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib al Hasan are the current Bangladesh captains in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively. Let’s see what they have to say regarding this issue. The trio shared their thoughts during the post-match press conference in the ongoing BPL 2017. Here are the excerpts:

Mashrafe bin Mortaza, ODI captain Actually it’s really tough to comment on this as it has been heard that the coach has resigned. It’s not official yet. The BCB may discuss with him. Actually I don’t really know about the matter, so it’s very tough to comment. I was there with the ODI team in South Africa for around two weeks. We have had a few positive discussions about the team then. We tried to win at least one ODI there. We never had any discussion related his resignation or something like that. If Hathurusingha does not want to come, then we can think about the options. We still don’t know the actual situation. If he confirms his resignation then we can know about options. If the BCB wants, then senior players might say something on that. There is still one and a half years left to the 2019 World Cup. If there is a new coach then hopefully he will get enough time before the World Cup. It depends on a lot of things. Previously coaches like Jamie Siddons and Dav Whatmore have worked with us and got success. So it’s tough to guess as to who can get success or who can’t. I believe the BCB will take the decision after much discussion.

Mushfiqur Rahim, Test captainI don’t know about the decision. Like everyone, I am shocked as well. Because we worked together during our last tour in South Africa. I don’t know what really happened. But the BCB will handle it. Now BPL is going on, it’s a big tournament. So we are concentrating on BPL. The BCB is working on other issues. It will be good if everything becomes fine once again. This is a matter between the BCB and the coach. Because we were together in the last tour. I don’t know when and how it happened. I hope whatever happens, Almighty will do good for us. It would be better if the solution comes early. We have international series after BPL. So early solution will be better for us. It’s his personal matter. If he thinks he is not happy with a particular player or with the team then it’s a different matter. Actually we don’t know why he resigned. And so far he did not clarify this matter. So until he returns, the matter is not clear to me.

Shakib al Hasan, T20I captainLet the decision come first from the BCB officially. I also heard the news via media. There are lots of ifs and buts. Let the matter become official first. Then we will see. It is better not to talk about this. Let the incident become clear first. If you ask about the next coach or any preference, then it’s a sensitive issue. So in that case, maintaining secrecy is important. If the BCB wants to know my opinion then I can give an answer to them. It is better not to discuss this matter openly.
