Tamim: Players believe they can turn it around

Update : 17 Oct 2017, 09:51 PM
Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal believes the Tigers have the ability to make a turnaround and bounce back in the three-match ODI series when they take on host South Africa in the second game Wednesday. Bangladesh were defeated by 10 wickets in the first ODI at De Beers Diamond Oval Sunday as South Africa openers Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla posted a world record stand by remaining unbeaten while chasing 279. Tamim admitted that both their batting and bowling have not been upto the mark but believes the team can come back and play better cricket to win the second ODI and square the series.

“The world depends on hope. We do too. We believe that we can do it. The bowlers haven’t fulfilled expectation on this tour but it doesn’t mean they can’t do it [Wednesday]. It is a new game, a new day. We have taken lessons as a group, so I will hope to rectify these mistakes and get better,” Tamim said to the media at Boland Park Tuesday. Bangladesh batsmen did not perform all that well in the South Africa tour so far. Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim scored a hundred in the Kimberley ODI but no other batsmen scored big with opener Imrul Kayes (31) turning out to be the second highest scorer. Tamim also admitted that the batsmen need to score big once they get set at the middle.

“I think some batsmen were unlucky. Imrul did all the hard work, he got out down the leg-side, which happened in the second Test match and in the first ODI. He played the appropriate shot and the bowler too doesn’t expect a wicket off that ball. If we can convert the 20s and 30s to 60s and 70s, we will score more runs as a team. I think all the batsmen know they need big score but I have zero complaint against their work ethic. They need to be luckier and smarter,” he said. Tamim is of the opinion that Bangladesh bowlers will learn from this series and perform better in the next match, and series.“I think some bowlers have done well but because we haven’t done well as a team, it is looking bad. They are all young bowlers so we know they will do well in the next series, after taking lessons from this series,” he concluded.
