Plays: Du Plessis' captain's knock, Soumya misses leg-stump line and Bavuma's stunner

Update : 08 Oct 2017, 01:31 AM
Commanding captain’s knock from Du PlessisProteas skipper Faf du Plessis played a superb knock, picking up his seventh century on the way. Du Plessis resumed the day on 62 runs and remained not out on 135 playing 181 balls, striking 15 boundaries. The Tigers took three quick wickets after a 243-run opening wicket stand when Du Plessis came out to bat. But the captain played confidently and took the game away from the opposition. The right-hander formed a 247-run partnership for the fourth wicket with No 3 batsman Hashim Amla, South Africa’s highest for this wicket against Bangladesh in Tests. This is the fourth time four or more hundreds have been scored in an innings against Bangladesh. And it's the second time they've conceded two 200+ partnerships in an innings.Soumya misses leg-stump line, gets bowledBangladesh had a new opening pair in the form of Imrul Kayes and Soumya Sarkar. The visiting side needed a good start in the opening stand as in both the Tests, the host’s openers stitched together more than 200 to give their team a solid platform. But the tourist’s opening wicket stand in the first innings ended after only 13. The home side’s pacer Kagiso Rabada made the breakthrough in the seventh over. And the way Soumya got out was eye-catching. A Test opener lost his leg-stump by missing the line of the ball completely. Soumya was pushed back by a volley of short balls. He sat back, then shuffled across to this good length ball. He played all around it, and watched the ball hit his leg-stick.

Bavuma’s stunning catch at gullyBangladesh were under pressure after losing two wickets within just 10 overs, in reply to South Africa’s massive first innings total of 573 runs for the loss of four wickets declared in 120 overs. A lot was dependent on captain Mushfiqur Rahim, the Tigers’ best batsman in the middle-order, particularly in the absence of opener Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib al Hasan. But the skipper could only manage to score seven. It was an outstanding catch by the diminutive Temba Bavuma, who was fielding at gully. His brilliant dive to his right certainly brought back memories of the legendary South Africa fielder Jonty Rhodes, who has taken such scintillating catches many a time. The ball was a back of a length delivery from seamer Duanne Olivier and pitched outside off-stump. Mushfiq played a cut shot and it flew off the face of the bat towards Bavuma's right. He judged the delivery slightly late and therefore, had to go with one hand. The delivery slightly went past him when he pounced at it and then tumbled to the ground to adjust his momentum. Somehow he held on. The ball went really quick and Bavuma grabbed a stunner. Even Bavuma was surprised after holding the catch. A crucial wicket for South Africa and a big blow for Bangladesh.
