The excitement prevailing in Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium during the Bangladesh Premier League 2016-17 season playoff day on Tuesday boiled over to the galleries as the fans of Dhaka Dynamites allegedly beat up police following the end of the Eliminator between Chittagong Vikings and Rajshahi Kings.
A law enforcement official said, “The moment the game ended, the Dhaka Dynamites cricketers entered dressing room number one. At that time, the Dhaka fans, who were at VIP Grand Stand immediately beside the dressing room, wanted to take selfies with the cricketers. When the police came over to stop them, there was a scuffle. The Dhaka fans became angry when police tried to catch one or two supporters.”
A video that recorded the skirmish shows the Dhaka fans attacking police with drum sticks. What's more, Munna Miraz, who works for Bangladesh Cricket Board's logistics division and wearing an accreditation card no less, was seen pointing his finger angrily towards a policeman.
However, the Dhaka fans gave a different account of events saying the fight started when police, sitting on the front row of the VIP Grand Stand, were asked to move from there.
Mirpur Thana OC Sazzad Hossain also echoed the same sentiment to that of the aforementioned police official.
Meanwhile, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury said, “A solution to this cannot be found right now. We sat with both the parties. After investigation, we will be able to ascertain what really happened. Then we can say more.”
