Chigumbura sees opportunity in shortest format

Update : 12 Nov 2015, 06:35 PM

After being comprehensively battered in the three-match one-day international series, Zimbabwe now turn their attention to the shortest format for a fresh breath of success. The dejected visiting skipper Elton Chigumbura believes they will be able to withstand the Tigers’ roar when the two sides meet for the first of their two-match international Twenty20 series today.

Meanwhile, the 2016 ICC World T20 is also in sight of both the teams as Chigumbura said this is a good platform for his side to prepare for the upcoming global event, scheduled to be hosted by India.

Chigumbura, before leaving for a training session yesterday afternoon, said their batting standard will be the key as anything can happen in a 20-over game and that is exactly what inspires the low ranked Zimbabwe ahead of their clash.

“It’s a new version and we have to make sure we bounce back and start well especially [today] so that we come up on top. Obviously we would like to put up a better performance in our batting compared to the one-day performance, so obviously batting is going to be the key,” said Chigumbura.

“It is important especially for us to find our best combination going for the World Cup. So every guy in the team is looking forward to perform and make sure they could get into the World Cup squad. Obviously this series is important for us at the same time. We would like to bounce back from this tour,” added the 29-year-old Zimbabwean captain.

The record of their previous meeting is also not pleasing for Zimbabwe, as Bangladesh won that match two years back in Bulawayo by 34 runs.

“We haven’t played against Bangladesh in this format for a long time. They are a different team now and their confidence will be high coming from the one-day series, so its going to be a good series and we just have to make sure we consider our game so that we can give a better performance,” he added.
