Comilla finally return to winning ways

Update : 29 Nov 2016, 06:57 PM
Defending champions Comilla Victorians finally produced a dominant performance on the field as they clinched their second win of the tournament defeating Barisal Bulls by eight wickets in their Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2016-17 season match in Mirpur’s Sher-e Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. The victory though did not change their fortunes as the holders are still mired at the bottom of the points table with four points. On the other hand, Barisal, who have six points, tasted their sixth consecutive loss and their chances of qualifying for the playoffs look very slim now. Chasing Barisal's 142/8, Comilla opening batsmen Imrul Kayes and Ahmed Shehzad formed a commanding 93-run partnership. Kayes scored 46 off 35 deliveries with half a dozen fours and a six while Shehzad made 61 off 56 deliveries with five boundaries. Despite the openers' departures, Marlon Samuels was unbeaten on 27 off 18 balls while Khalid Latif was undefeated on a five-ball seven as Comilla reached their destination with an over to spare. Barisal captain Mushfiqur Rahim is disconsolate after being dismissed by Comilla's Nabil Samad (not in picture) DHAKA TRIBUNEEarlier, Barisal captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and elected to bat first. Their two foreign recruits Dilshan Munaweera and Dawid Malan opened the batting for Barisal. However, they made a poor start as Comilla struck in the second over through paceman Shahadat Hossain, who cleaned up Munaweera (seven). Malan was the next batsman to be dismissed in the seventh over after scoring nine. Jeevan Mendis (28) and skipper Mushfiq (29) scored some runs in the middle order but both of them failed to score big and got out after being settled at the crease. Shahriar Nafees came in to bat at No 5 but he too departed after scoring 11, much to the disappointment of Barisal. The left-hander was in good form in the first phase of the tournament, making handy contributions which in turn helped Barisal to win a few matches. But ever since he lost his form, Barisal have struggled and now find themselves second from bottom. Abu Haider (16 not out) smashed two sixes in the latter stages of the innings to guide his side past the 140-run mark. Comilla spinner Nabil Samad bagged three wickets conceding 17 runs while leg-spinner Rashid Khan picked up two giving away 21 runs.BRIEF SCOREComilla Victorians 145/2 in 19 overs (Shehzad 61, Kayes 46, Samuels 27*) beat Barisal Bulls 142/8 (Mushfiq 29, Mendis 28, Nabil 3/17) by eight wickets
