India women defeated their Bangladesh counterparts by 64 runs in the opening match of the Asian Cricket Council's Women’s Twenty20 Asia Cup at the Asian Institute of Technology ground, Bangkok in Thailand on Saturday.
Rumana Ahmed and her troop were bundled out for 54 in 18.2 overs after India posted 118/6 in 20 overs.
After being asked to bat first, India made a good start riding on opening batters Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana as the pair added 70 runs. However, Bangladesh came back well following the departure of Mandhana (41) off the bowling of seamer Jahanara Alam.
India kept losing wickets at regular intervals as Bangladesh made things tight for the batting side. The Indians went on to lose four wickets in the final two overs with off-spinner Khadija-tul Kubra the most successful Bangladesh bowler with two scalps.
Mithali remained not out on 49 off 59 balls while skipper Harmanpreet Kaur added 19 runs as India put up a decent total on the board.
In reply, Bangladesh were in all sorts of trouble and never really recovered from their horrible start with only Shaila Sharmin (18) and Salma Khatun (17) reaching double figures. None of the other batters offered any resistance as Bangladesh were skittled out with 10 balls to spare.
Leg-spinner Poonam Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/13 from her quota of four overs, while Anuja Patil and Jhulan Goswami bagged two wickets each.
Bangladesh will take on hosts Thailand in their second game this Monday at the same venue.BRIEF SCOREBangladesh 54 in 18.2 overs (Sharmin 18, Salma 17, Poonam 3/13) lost to India 118/6 (Mithali 49*, Mandhana 41, Kubra 2/12) by 64 runs
