Walton Central Zone and BCB South Zone made good starts in the Bangladesh Cricket League as they won their respective first round matches on the last day at two different venues Wednesday.
Walton thrashed BCB North Zone by an innings and 70 runs at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong while South picked up a comprehensive eight-wicket win against Islami Bank East Zone at Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium, Rajshahi.
North resumed the day on 172/5 in their second innings, still needing another 172 runs to avoid innings defeat.
The overnight pair of Marshall Ayub and Mahidul Islam Ankon looked resolute to salvage the match as they played almost two sessions without losing any wicket.
But left-arm spinner Hasan Murad dislodged Mahidul, who played a stubborn 25-run knock off 163 balls, to break the stand.
Marshall soon completed his century but got dismissed for 101 runs playing 246 balls when the score was 274.
Walton bowlers did not waste any time after that as they got the last four wickets without conceding any runs.
Member of the U-19 World Cup winning squad, Murad, who was adjudged player of the series in the National Cricket League, ended up with 6/74.
Walton’s Mohammad Mithun was adjudged player of the match for his century.
In the other match, East, resuming on 195/5, could add 25 more runs before overnight batsman Afif Hossain departed for 86.
At 220/6 East were leading by 51 runs.
Nahidul Islam, the left-arm spinner of South did not allow the target become a challenging one as he grabbed three more wickets to bundle out East for 257.
As a result South got a target of 89 runs.
Nahidul returned with 4/30.
While chasing the target, South lost both their openers early to get reduced to 18/2 but Towhid Hridoy and Amit Hasan navigated the ship to shore without any more hiccups.
Towhid remained not out on 54.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Zakir Hasan, who scored a century for South, was adjudged man of the match.
