Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to portray Elinor Dashwood in a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, with the film's first trailer offering audiences a glimpse of the latest retelling of Jane Austen's literary classic.
Edgar-Jones, best known for Normal People and Twisters, plays the eldest Dashwood sister, whose life is upended following her father's death. Forced to leave the family estate, Elinor, her sisters and their widowed mother move to a modest cottage, where they navigate love, loss and the rigid social expectations of 19th-century England.
The film is directed by Georgia Oakley, whose debut feature Blue Jean received widespread critical acclaim. The screenplay has been adapted by Australian author Diana Reid.
The film is produced by Working Title Films's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, alongside India Flint and Jo Wallett.
First published in 1811 under the pseudonym "By a Lady," Sense and Sensibility follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they struggle with romance, heartbreak, and financial uncertainty after the death of their father.
While the reserved and practical Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars, the passionate Marianne becomes involved with the charming John Willoughby before eventually finding happiness with Colonel Brandon.
Edgar-Jones rose to international fame with the 2020 television adaptation of Normal People. She later starred in Where the Crawdads Sing and Twisters, cementing her status as one of Hollywood's rising stars.
The upcoming adaptation aims to introduce Austen's enduring novel to a new generation while preserving the emotional depth and timeless themes that have made it one of English literature's most celebrated works.
