‘Boli (The Wrestler)’ wins at Busan International Film Festival

The hyper-local film has now been recognised on an international stage for its cultural and linguistic nuances.

The film ‘Boli (The Wrestler)’ has won the New Currents Award at the 28th 2023 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF)

The movie by Applebox films is a culturally rich Chittagonian tale deeply rooted in its culture. The hyper-local film has now been recognised on an international stage for its cultural and linguistic nuances. 

The judges in the New Currents section of the festival declared of Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury's directorial creation, “His film 'The Wrestler' is akin to a gripping single-round wrestling match, where the story is magically told."

Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury spoke on the preservation of the dialect and its significance in the film, "Many of the newer generations in Chittagong have steered away from our regional dialect, resulting in the erosion of our native language. 'Boli' will serve as a repository of our linguistic heritage, as it has already earned a place in the archives of the Busan Cinema Centre."

The movie “Bali” was funded by a grant from the Bangladesh government in the fiscal year 2020-21. The film was continuously shot in the coastal area of ​​Chittagong in April-May of 2022. Nasir Uddin Khan played the lead role in the movie. 

BIFF continued from October 4 to 13. The 92-minute long film 'Boli' premiered on October 7, 8 and 9 at three local multiplexes in Busan.
