The Indian chapter of the Federation of film critics (FIPRESCI) announced India's top 10 films of 2022. Several Bengali films secured a spot on the list yet again. In previous years, several Jaya Ahsan starrers like ‘Bini Sutoy' and Aupi Karim's ‘Mayar Jonjal' had made the list.
All That Breathes:
The movie directed by Shaunak Sen is set in the backdrop of Delhi's apocalyptic air and escalating violence. The 97 minute tale follows two brothers dedicated to running a bird hospital dedicated to rescuing injured black kites, a staple in the skies of New Delhi, India. The “Kite Brothers” struggle with family relationships, attempting to save the neglected kites in a poetic chronicle amid environmental toxicity and civil unrest.
Aparajito:
Directed by Anik Datta, the 138 minute film is a tribute to filmmaker Satyajit Ray in his birth centenary. Inspired by the making of Ray's iconic film 'Pather Panchali'.
I'm Not the River Jhelum:
“Jhelum” is a metaphor for the traumatic memories of the character suffered under the violence of her community. The 95 minute movie is directed by Prabhash Chandra.
Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam:
A comedy centred around a group of Malayali travellers who stop at a village in Tamil Nadu. The 105 minute film which walks amongst faith, delusion, dream and trance is directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery.
Naanera:
The 124 minute film directed by Deepankar Prakash begins with the death. After the passing of Manish's father, he is forced to start taking his life decisions that entangle him in a secret love affair with a cousin and the family finds itself in the midst of another death.
Eikhoigi Yum:
Translating into “Our Home”, Romi Meitei's “Eikhoigi Yum” show the day to day life of individuals who have created a home over a floating biomass called Phumshang. The 89 minute film wanders through the reality of those who have had their existence denied.
Seventeeners:
The 122 minute film was directed by Prithvi Konanur. The plot is focused on the aftermath of the leaking of a homemade sex-tape of two 17-year-olds. The tape filmed in a classroom on their college campus follows the irreparable damage caused due to the incident.
Three of Us:
A movie wrapped around the delicate thread of emotions about love, loss, awareness and liberation. “Three of Us” was Directed by Avinash Arun.
Tora's Husband:
The 150 minute film shows a father straining to keep his small-town business afloat amid personal loss and lockdowns. The movie about inter-personal struggles was directed by Rima Das.
