Acclaimed Bangladeshi filmmaker, Rubaiyat Hossain, received a grant of 50,000 Euros
(BDT 53lacs) from the 37th World Cinema Fund for her upcoming film, “The Difficult
Bride.”
A total of 11 films received grant out of the 176 films from 51 countries that were submitted
to this edition of Berlinale's World Cinema Fund. Aside from Bangladesh, films from
Argentina, Peru, Colombia and other countries were selected by the esteemed judges.
Rubaiyat Hossain's “The Difficult Bride” was selected under the Production Funding
Category. The director expressed her joy about winning the highly competitive fund. She
told Dhaka Tribune Showtime that she drew inspiration from an installation photography
from Habiba Nowrose. She informed the film is in early financing stage right now. “It will
take another 6-8 months to complete it,” she added.
According to the director, “The Difficult Bride” is going to revolve around the psychological
journey of a bride-to-be under pressure. The story takes a turn towards the supernatural, as
the bride goes to the beauty parlour.
In addition to Rubaiyat's “The Difficult Bride,” films from Argentina, Venezuela and Central
African Republic got fundings under Production Funding category. World Cinema Fund provides grants for films in other
categories as well.
Rubaiyat Hossain's latest film “Shimu” premiered at the prestigious Toronto
International Film Festival in 2019 and was successfully released theatrically in many
countries including France, Japan and Portugal. Earlier the director made two more feature
films- “Meherjan” and “Under Construction.”
