Sweden has hosted all the international creative leadership conferences on climate change this year. Sharmin Sultana Sumi, singer, songwriter and composer of eminent Bangladeshi music band Chirkutt, represented Bangladesh at the event ‘Creative Climate Leadership-Scandinavia', held in Sweden on November 2.
Sumi showcased her project ‘Nodi Rocks', which aims to use music as a tool to create public awareness about climate change. 7 renowned Bangladeshi music bands composed 7 different songs dedicated toward various rivers of Bangladesh for Sumi's “Nodi Rocks- Season 1.” She released those songs and at the same time arranged concerts with those bands to raise awareness about the endangered rivers of the country.
Sumi and her project “Nodi Rocks,” received praise at the conference for their creative approach to raising public awareness.
“The project was applauded by everyone present in there. Many musicians of Scandinavian countries showed interest in participating at ‘Nodi Rocks'”, Sumi said. “This was an opportunity to inform the world about our collective efforts from Bangladesh to protect mother nature with the project”.
This event was about empowering artists and cultural professionals to take action on the climate crisis with creativity. Participants from a large number of countries and organizations attended the conference. Perceiving the model of “Nodi Rocks” as an adaptative model, representatives of various countries wanted to collaborate on this project.
Sumi aims to spread the program nationwide, and someday worldwide. As part of her project's future plans, Sumi hopes to have a song for each river, mountain, bird, and other aspects of mother nature.
Sumi is now on a tour to attend music conferences globally. She is currently staying in Norway to attend “Oslo World Music Festival” after participating in WOMEX, another music conference held in Portugal.
