Young filmmakers awarded for films on transgender, hijra, gender diverse community

Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, a freedom fighter, cultural persona, and renowned director graced the event as the guest of honour

On Tuesday evening, June 21,  an award-giving ceremony was hosted at the Kabi Sufia Kamal Auditorium, National Museum. Seven short films on the issues of human rights, social acceptance as well as gender-based violence about the transgender, hijra, and gender-diverse population were premiered. 

Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, a freedom fighter, cultural persona, and renowned director graced the event as the guest of honour along with M Hamid who is a freedom fighter, a cultural personality, and the former director-general of BTV, and Anisul Islam Hero, chairperson of Bandhu Social Welfare Society and a prominent classical dancer.

Guests at the event have stated that cinema is a great medium in bringing this backward community to the forefront. It is necessary to make more films about this community and exhibit them to people from all walks of life to create rapid public awareness.

With the financing from Possibility and Bandhu Social Welfare Society (BANDHU), seven filmmakers made thematic short films on transgender, hijra, and gender diverse population under the Short Film Competition-2022. 

The first prize was a crest with fifty thousand taka in cash, the second prize was a crest with forty thousand taka in cash and the third prize was a crest with thirty thousand taka in cash.
