In a new 2021 preview video, HBO released footage from 'Scenes from a Marriage,' marking the beginning of its promotional campaign.
HBO ordered the remake of the Swedish TV series, directed by master filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, last summer. Michelle Williams and Oscar Isaac were set to reprise the roles of Erland Josephson and Liv Ullmann.
Due to scheduling issues, Williams has dropped out of the project and Jessica Chastain has joined the cast. She previously worked with Isaac in JC Chandor’s A Most Violent Year.
The HBO limited series is directed by Our Boys and The Affair co-creator Hagai Levi, and tackles themes like monogamy, divorce and fidelity - set against the backdrop of modern American domestic life.
The original series was inspired by Bergman’s own difficulties with relationships. The director was married five times. Liv Ullmann, who starred in the original series, had a five-year affair with Bergman.
