New Netflix film Serious Men, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, explores Indian parents’ obsession with educating their children, which often reflects their desire to climb the social ladder via good grades.
Siddiqui stars as a lower middle class Indian, Ayyan Mani, who wants his son to grow up to be one of the ‘serious men’ who occupy the big offices and the tall skyscrapers. And so, he comes up with a plan to sell his son as a ‘prodigy.’
Mani, a common man in Mumbai, weaves an elaborate plan to rise in society and vicariously bask in his young son’s success.
“When a slum dweller spins a web of lies in pursuit of the upward mobility he has long craved, his ruse could be especially dangerous for his young son,” reads the Netflix synopsis of the film.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui said regarding the project, “I am very excited to be a part of Netflix’s Serious Men and work with a creative mind like Sudhir Mishra. This is my second stint with Netflix after Sacred Games, and I hope that people give Ayyan Mani from Serious Men the same love that they extended to Ganesh Gaitonde from Sacred Games.”
Starring stars Indira Tiwari, M Nasser and Shweta Basu Prasad in supporting roles, the film will be released on October 2.
