Adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s masterpiece Srikanta, a film titled Rajlakshmi o Srikanta will be made in Kolkata, with Bangladeshi actress Jyotika Jyoti playing the lead role.
The actress revealed the news on Thursday on a post on Facebook, “My new film is Rajlakshmi o Srikanta. Playing Rajlakshmi in it.”
Bakita Byaktigato famed director Pradipta Bhattacharyya is directing Rajlakshmi o Srikanta while Ritwick Chakraborty, who also played the lead in Bakita Byaktigato, is playing the titular role in the upcoming flick.
Pradipta said that contemporary crises like illegal entrance on borders, women trafficking, bootlegging, and social stratification based on religion and caste will play a major part in developing the story which is adapted from the novel, Srikanta.
In the film, Rajlakshmi is a girl from a struggling family who migrates to India from Bangladesh and eventually falls as prey to a women trafficking ring who forces her into prostitution.
Pradipta also mentioned that the film wont be a period drama like other endeavours which is adapted from the masterpiece, including Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen’s Rajlakshmi O Srikanta in 1958 and Soha Ali Khan’s Iti Srikanta in 2004. Rather, the story of the film is set in contemporary times.
The film’s shooting is slated to commence from June 15 in Kolkata, Jharkhand and West Bengal’s side of the Sundarbans.
