Bollywood stood in solidarity with India’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic on Sunday by lighting candles, lamps and torches.
On Friday, the Prime Minister of India urged citizens to switch off the lights at their homes and light lamps, candles or torches for nine minutes at 9pm on April 5 and “challenge the darkness spread by the corona crisis”. Bollywood celebrities have enthusiastically responded to the appeal on Sunday and swore to fight the outbreak of the coronavirus.
Amitabh Bachchan shared pictures of lighting a torch and mentioned a portion of his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poem on Twitter.
He tweeted: “T 3492 - ‘Hai andheri raat par diya jalaana kab maana hai (In the hour of darkness why not light a candle)’ ... another epic poem of my Father and how visionary it has proven tonight for the #9PM9minute call. Will put up the entire poem by tomorrow on video!”
Shahrukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s son AbRam was seen making lamps out of legos and placing them on the balcony.
Anil Kapoor uploaded a video along with a caption that read: “All in this together.” The actor was seen walking with a candle and chanting prayers.
Madhuri Dixit wrote on social media: “Let the light of the diyas, candles bring back light into our lives as these illuminate our hearts with positivity & strength.
Hema Malini wrote, “We lit lamps exactly at 9PM for 9 minutes in deference to the PM’s wish.”
Shraddha Kapoor wrote, “Within you is the light of a thousand suns ~ Robert Adams Diya lamp #StayHomeStaySafe #InThisTogether.”
Millions of people across India lit candles from their homes and renewed their commitment to the fight against coronavirus.
