Young film-makers make bold statements at Star BracU Short Film Contest 2019

A total of 25 films from 12 universities were shortlisted for the final round this year

Star BracU Short Film Contest 2019, jointly organized by Star Cineplex, and Brac University Film Club (BUFC), held its grand finale, and prize giving ceremony at the Star Cineplex in capital's Bashundhara City on Thursday evening. The theme of this year's inter-university short film competition was Digital Bangladesh, and young film-makers made bold statements with their short films, on the pros and cons of the inevitable digitized future of the country.

A total of 25 films from 12 universities were shortlisted for the final round. The top prize winners were ranked by a 100 point system, where 90 was given by the jury members, and 10 were given from social media reactions on the film given by public. This year Afsana Mimi, Salauddin Lavlu, and Chayanika Chowdhury were the jury members. 

The participating universities were BRAC University, North South University, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), Independent University Bangladesh (IUB), Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), United International University (UIU), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Daffodil International University, ASA University, and International University Of Business Agriculture & Technology.

AIUB’s Tanjeel Sultan Turja’s short film The Call won the first prize along with Tk50000.

North South University’s Pracheta Ahana Alam won the second prize along with Tk 30000 for her satire short Khichuri Burrito. The third place was jointly awarded to Brac University’s Hasib Imtihian for his film Sonali Bikel and MIST’s Abhishek Singha for his short Make it Visible. They shared the Tk20000 prize money.

A special award was given out to IUB’s Wasi Noor Azam, and his film W(dot)- Be A Digital Superhero.

The second prize winner Pracheta Ahana Alam was praised by the judges, and audience for her political satire. She took the stage while receiving her prize, and reminded the audience of the importance of digital data security.

She said: “This film is about many important things. It's about surveillance capitalism. It's about Jeremy Bentham and Michel Foucault's philosophy. 

“It's about your reality. It's about our reality. But it all boils down to one single thing. It's all saying one thing. F**k the system,” she added.

Her surprising remarks was heavily cheered by the theatre full of young audience.

Star Cineplex has been organizing this inter-university short film contest since 2013. This year they partnered with BracU, and Tecno Mobile to execute the event.

Moreover, Star Cineplex Chairman Mahboob Rahman also announced the release of the first soundtrack of a film produced by him, No Dorai-Dare to Surf at the same event. The soundtrack titled Jontrona was penned, produced and sang by Mohon Sharif.

He also said that they are hopeful about the film, and it is scheduled to hit local theatres by November 25.
