The British Council’s Libraries Unlimited Project and Cultural Centre, in coordination with the Department of Public Libraries, celebrated National Library Day 2019 on Tuesday, with the slogan “Let’s read books in libraries and develop enlightened minds”.
Day-long activities were organised at British Council’s Fuller Road premises in Dhaka on the occasion. The key events of the celebration were the opening of a digital wall, free micro:bit computer coding and programming classes, and creative play sessions with toy bricks. The digital wall also featured the digital library of the British Council.
Director General of the Department of Public Libraries Ashish Kumar Sarker was present as the chief guest at the inauguration.
In his speech, Ashish mentioned that the British Council’s Libraries Unlimited Project has been very supportive in the development of the library sector in Bangladesh.
The Libraries Unlimited Project also participated in the main rally of National Library Day, organized by the Department of Public Libraries.
In this regard, Kirsty Crawford, programme director of the project, said: “We are working with the Department of Public Libraries for the modernization of the library sector and increasing the number of library users. We are introducing different services, which are new in Bangladesh’s libraries, such as enhancing internet services for patrons, micro:bit computer coding classes, and toy brick creative play sessions for the cognitive development of children.”
It was the second National Library Day celebration in Bangladesh. The day was first recognized by the government on February 5, 2018 to raise public awareness on libraries.
