Although, it’s not as if Morgan Freeman needs to be featured in every Uzbek movie. In fact, there are a lot of other movies without Morgan Freeman in it and Uzbek citizens are free to go and enjoy these.
However, the film has been blocked as the production company of the movie, Timur Films, was accused of scamming. The alleged house boldly used Freeman’s image in their promotional materials to give the false impression of his appearance in the movie.
According to local newspapers, Morgan Freeman’s face has been used on the posters of the movie followed by a brief presence of the Shawshank Redemption star in the movie trailer while he has no role in the full length film.
Podrobno, a government-affiliated news agency stated that the images of Morgan Freeman were used to promote Daydi were taken from Last Knights, a poorly-received 2015 action adventure in which Freeman starred as a Moorish nobleman.
The movie features Uzbek actor Mirolim Qilichev as a police officer who has to protect Uzbekistan from various nefarious assailants.
The production house made no official comment on the matter so far. The release of Daydi has now been postponed pending a ruling by two local authorities.
The film industry in Uzbekistan is fertile yet overlooked. Studios churn out dozens of films each year, but only a few of these movies manage an international release.
