First female cinematographer nominated at ASC

Update : 13 Jan 2018, 09:02 PM
The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has nominated a female cinematographer for the first time in its 32-year history on the feature film category. “Mudbound” cinematographer Rachel Morrison has been nominated for the society’s top award for Outstanding Achievement on January 9 alongside other proponent cinematographers like Roger Deakins for “Blade Runner 2049”, Bruno Delbonnel for “Darkest Hour”, Hoyte Van Hoytema for “Dunkirk” and Dan Laustsen for “The Shape of Water”. Netflix feature film “Mudbound”, based on the Hillary Jordan play of the same name, revolves around a pair of white and black World War II veterans dealing with the trauma of war and the reality of racism in rural Mississippi, USA. The film, directed by Bee Rees, stars Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Mary J Bilge, Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell. This takes her one step closer to become the first ever woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in Best Cinematography category, as ASC’s nomination usually reflects that year’s Oscar jury selection. The society has nominated several women in the television categories in the past, but this is the first time a woman has been nominated for her work in a feature length film. Morrison has already won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Cinematographer for “Mudbound.” Her other films where she worked behind the camera include Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station” (2013) and his upcoming Marvel superhero film “Black Panther” (2018). The 32nd American Society of Cinematographers Awards is to be held on February 16.
