Billboard critics published their top 100 picks of 2017, which varies widely from the year’s most commercially successful singles. Last year’s headliner, Taylor Swift, enters at #23 with “Gorgeous.” One of 2017’s breakout stars, 19 year old Texas born Khalid, lands on #12 with “Location.” Kesha makes a comeback at #18 with “Praying.”Lorde misses the top 10 by three spots while the likes of Drake, Jay Z, Paramore, Bruno Mars, Charlie XCX, DJ Khaled, Pink and Rihanna fill other positions in the top 50. The year’s biggest hit “Shape of you” by Ed Sheeran lays low at #41 of the critics’ choice list.
“Bad Liar” is a testament to the way in which the always-evolving Gomez has matured her approach to pop since her early days in “Selena Gomez & the Scene.” Her 2015 album “Revival” showed continued refinement of her vocal technique.
Billboard’s J. Lipshutz writes, “The song was not a huge hit in 2017. Yet “Bad Liar” was the most interesting and enjoyable song on top 40 radio this year, a weird little moment of frustrated melody and imperfect romance that may prove to be a high point in Gomez’s increasingly fascinating career.”
