Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to take effective measures to make all the rivers including Buriganga River surrounding Dhaka navigable and pollution-free.
The premier gave the directives while presiding over a meeting on reclamation of all flowing rivers including Buriganga around Dhaka city and introduction of circular road and river route surrounding the capital at her office on Sunday.
After the meeting, PM's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury briefed the journalists.
The prime minister said: "This is our project and we will have to implement it."
Hasina said with the implementation of the project, it would bring a positive change in the environment of Dhaka city.
The meeting decided that the Shipping Ministry will launch circular river route that will touch Ashulia, Amin Bazar, Sadarghat, Fatullah, Kanchpur and Tongi.
The Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Water Development Board will construct the four-lane circular road including Eastern bypass around Dhaka City with the assistance of Bangladesh Army.
The Prime Minister's office will coordinate the construction of the circular road.
With the introduction of circular road and river route, transportation of people and goods would be easier.
