“The prime minister has scheduled a press conference on the Rampal issue at 4pm at her official residence Ganobhaban,” prime minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told the Dhaka Tribune on Friday.
The 1,320MW coal-based power plant will be built at Rampal in Bagerhat near the Sundarbans mangrove forest.
Bangladesh Power Development Board and the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited of India under the name of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company will build the plant.
The prime minister's announcement comes amid widespread protests against the plant by environmentalists and various groups who say the plant might do irreversible damage to the forest.
