Around 100 more villages in Hatiya, Noakhali went under water due to the torrential rainfall and tidal surges yesterday.
BIWTC sources said the rough weather and tidal surges caused the sea track to suspend on this route. When contacted Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Hatiya, M Mahidul Islam, quoting respective union parishad chairmen told this correspondent that tidal water seeped into the villages through the breaches of the flood control embankment in the upazila.
The water washed away several shrimp enclosures and pond fish and damaged transplanted vegetable plants in the last four days, the UNO said, adding that a 100 more villages went under 3-4 feet of water yesterday.
Among the newly inundated 100 villages are Steamer Ghat, Farji village, Kalu Haji Gram, Lumbria, Bobjan, Char Kawlash, Char Latia, Baju Gram, Char King, Bolia, South Bojgram, Sulaakia, Sonadia, Char Changa, Mijchara, Satful, Adrsha Gram, Molla Gram, Monhigram, Batan, Chiaghli. Nearly 40,000 people from Nijum Dwip were marooned on Monday.
The tidal surge also damaged Kutcha roads and at least 40,000 people from Hatiya's various unions had been leading a sub-human life.
Locals said the tidal water entered five villages in Nijum Dwip of Hatiya upazila. The water washed away fish from over 100 ponds and fish farms, while around 20 shops adjacent to the cross dam were washed away. A good number of poultry and goats were also washed away.
People from the affected areas with no preparations in this regard were forced to spend their days with no roof over their heads.
