As the monsoon season nears, people’s worries in Louhajang upazila, Munshiganj are mounting, as it’s the season of river erosion too.
Villagers in Louhajang are not stranger to the Padma River’s aggression during the monsoon. The mighty river has gobbled up many thousand hectares of land in the past, as well as households, schools and places of worship. Every year, the Padma changes the landscape of the villages on its banks.
Locals complain that the authorities always put temporary measures in place, and never employ a permanent solution to stop the river erosion.
Last year, the local administration and Bangladesh Water Development Board officials arranged for dredging in the river to divert its course, yet more than 50 families lost their homestead to the river.
This year, about 200 families in three villages are at risk of losing everything to the Padma, locals say, if the authorities concerned don’t take proper steps at the proper time.
