Even a century ago, there were all kinds of animals living in Dhaka. But as the urban jungle grew, most of the animals moved away from the city.
Monkeys living in the cities need to learn how to survive in urban areas. They may have to steal human food where there aren’t many trees around. In Dhaka, there are barely any.
But Old Dhaka is still home to some monkeys. Locals are used to seeing them, and sometimes give the monkeys food, too.
But because of the Covid-19 lockdown, many families are experiencing a sudden loss of livelihood and shortage of food. The monkeys, too, are suffering, as there are very few people looking after them.
So it was refreshing to see students of Dhaka Collegiate School Batch 2007 offering food to some of the monkeys in Old Dhaka on Wednesday, after they distributed necessary food items to over 120 families.
