Rohingya man hacked dead at Cox’s Bazar camp

He used to work as a volunteer at the camp

A Rohingya man was hacked to death at Palongkhali Camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazaar early on Wednesday.

The deceased is Mohammad Zafor Alam, 35. He used to work as a volunteer in the camp.

The incident took place at Block H51 of Palongkhali Camp No 18 at around 4am, said Assistant Superintendent of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Md Faruk Ahmed. 

The police officer said a gang of miscreants numbering 20-25 attacked Zafor with sharp weapons when he was returning home after the end of his duty.

They stabbed Zafor indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

The attackers had also opened fire on volunteers patrolling the area, said the ASP.

After being rescued, Zafor was rushed to MSF Hospital, where the doctor on duty pronounced him dead, said the APBn official. 

Soon after, the police started a drive at the camp to nab the perpetrators.
