On Victory Day, let us recommit to building a better Bangladesh

The promise of a free nation made in 1971 can only be honoured by ensuring that our people are well taken care of today, too

Update : 16 Dec 2025, 11:55 AM

Every year, on December 16, Bangladesh pauses to commemorate a defining moment in its history -- Victory Day, the triumphant end of the Liberation War of 1971 and the birth of a sovereign nation.

Today, we look back on this day once again when, 54 years ago, the people of Bangladesh secured their freedom from an oppressive force that was determined to erase their identity.

What has emerged from this victory is not only a new country but a testament to the resilience, unity, and an unyielding hope for autonomy that are synonymous with the Bangladeshi people.

As we honour the martyrs and freedom fighters today, we must remember not only the triumph but also the immense sacrifices that were made: Countless lives were lost, and millions more suffered, as the Mukti Bahini and ordinary citizens alike fought valiantly for justice and freedom.

The spirit of those fighters became woven into the fabric of the nation, bound by the collective dream of building a country founded on democracy, secularism, equality, and unity

This story of Bangladesh’s bravery and resilience did not end in 1971, however. The nation has seen remarkable milestones in terms of economic development, socio-economic progress, and a growing presence on the global stage.

It has established an identity rooted in empathy and strength, as it not only tackled unforeseen global crises competently, but also did not waver in lending a helping hand to those in need, even with its cup half full.

Even so, a lot remains to be done: The very attitude and determination that defined our liberation must now influence our efforts to confront current challenges, and deliver on the rightful demands for dignity and justice of the young protesters echoing our freedom fighters from 1971.

We must heed the lessons of history: True freedom comes not only from sovereignty, but from how democracy is upheld. The pursuit of lawful justice, accountable leadership, and equitable opportunity will define the path ahead. We must not let continuous economic uncertainty, widening gaps in standard of living, and institutional vulnerabilities be normalized any more than we have.

While the trials may look different, it is these modern fronts that require our undeterred attention and dedication; the promise of a free nation made in 1971 can only be honoured by ensuring that our people are well taken care of today, too.

Victory Day should inspire more than just national pride: It should encourage introspection and action. Our liberation was realized with unity -- across social, religious, and cultural borders -- and today, we must reaffirm that unity is still a lived reality.

We must continue to build a society where diverse voices are heard and respected, where democratic institutions function with integrity, and where every citizen has a stake in the nation’s prosperity.

As we honour those who gave everything for this nation, let us also recommit to the unfinished work of building a Bangladesh that lives up to the ideals of its founding -- a Bangladesh that is progressive, just, and free.
