The hidden cost of entertainment

How videos on social media shape our lives

Update : 20 Feb 2025, 10:28 AM

Social media has revolutionized how we consume and share content, with Facebook playing a leading role in this transformation. Among its many features, videos have become a dominant force, captivating millions of users daily.

However, beneath the surface of endless entertainment lies a hidden trade-off: The considerable amount of time we invest in watching these videos, which not only drains our time but also alters our mental state by stirring our emotions and shaping our perceptions in ways that may not always be healthy or constructive.

Every day, millions of people are drawn to various videos on social media, ranging from funny clips and viral challenges to news updates and celebrity gossip. Although these videos provide quick entertainment, they consume far more of our time than we realize.

The system behind this is quite simple but powerful. On social media platforms, creators and distributors view our attention as the most valuable resource. In the same way that products are priced based on demand, the amount of time we spend watching a video and the total number of views determine its worth. The longer we engage with a video, the higher its value becomes, benefiting both the content creators who earn revenue through advertisements and sponsorships, and the platform itself, which profits from ad space.

In this way, our time doesn’t just serve as the cost of entertainment; it sets the price of the content itself. This model incentivizes creators to produce content that maximizes engagement, often encouraging addictive, attention-grabbing material that keeps us watching for longer periods.

Ultimately, our time -- spent watching these videos -- becomes a form of payment, with the platform and creators reaping the financial benefits, while users unknowingly subsidize this economy. The more attention we provide, the more valuable the content becomes, leading to a cycle where we unknowingly trade precious hours for quick and shallow entertainment.

A significant drawback stems from the way algorithms deliver content. Videos of any and all variety are presented one after another in an unpredictable sequence. This psychological manipulation is especially concerning because it is not always intentional on the part of the user. The algorithms, designed to keep us engaged, operate with one primary goal: Maximizing screen time.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital distractions, it is crucial to remember that our time is one of our most precious resources

By exploiting human psychology -- our curiosity, need for novelty, and emotional responsiveness -- these algorithms ensure that we stay hooked. In doing so, they create a kind of emotional rollercoaster that can leave us mentally drained and less capable of managing our emotions effectively in real life.

Constant exposure to dramatic or sensational videos can distort our perception of reality, making the world seem more chaotic, dangerous, or superficial. This can lead to increased anxiety, mistrust, or even apathy toward important issues, as we become desensitized to the constant barrage of information and emotional triggers.

Instead of focusing on personal growth, acquiring new knowledge, or building meaningful connections, we risk falling into a cycle of passive consumption. People become less inclined to engage in face-to-face conversations, participate in community activities, or cultivate hobbies that require sustained effort and attention.

These activities are often pushed aside in favour of endless scrolling, leading to a loss of fulfilling engagement in our lives. This shift can erode the social bonds within our communities and contribute to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

However, we are not powerless. By being more intentional about what we watch and setting clear boundaries on screen time, we can regain control over our schedules. Supporting content creators who prioritize education, inspiration, or meaningful engagement can also help shift the balance toward more valuable content. Additionally, understanding how these videos monetize our attention can encourage us to make more informed decisions about how we spend our time online.

Practical steps can make a difference. For instance, setting daily limits on video consumption or using apps that monitor and restrict screen time can help break the cycle of overconsumption. Actively seeking out content that aligns with our values and goals can also make our time online more enriching. Furthermore, taking regular breaks from social media to reconnect with real-life experiences -- like nature, physical activities, or creative pursuits -- can improve our mental and emotional well-being.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital distractions, it is crucial to remember that our time is one of our most precious resources. By choosing to spend it wisely, we can ensure that our online experiences contribute positively to our lives rather than simply entertaining us in the moment. The key lies in striking a balance -- embracing the benefits of technology while staying mindful of its potential drawbacks -- to live a life that is both fulfilling and grounded in meaningful connections.
