Chittagong Hill Tracts: The need for comprehensive solutions

Military action is not the way

Update : 23 Sep 2024, 02:23 PM

The Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) have always been a part of Bangladesh or Bengal for hundreds of years, despite any obstacles or conspiracies we may face. However, if challenges arise, we must approach them with a problem-solving mindset.

Military action, however, is myopic and should never be used to resolve social, political, or ethnic issues. We may possess strength or muscle power that allows us to suppress dissent for extended periods -- be it one decade, two decades, or even three. However, if those being suppressed want to assert themselves, it is essential to approach all situations with a commitment to peace.

The current situation in the CHT is an ethnic and social issue that should be resolved peacefully, taking into account the opinions of all parties involved. We need to adopt a holistic perspective. An ethnic problem can only be addressed if we are able to understand the challenges faced by others and work collaboratively toward solutions. Focusing solely on our own concerns will not resolve any ethnic conflict -- it is crucial to ensure that there is no discrimination or injustice perpetrated by the military or any other institution.

In this case, the problems faced by the indigenous population include discrimination at the state level and in various regions, as well as issues such as poor communication, underdeveloped hospitals, and a lack of essential facilities. We need to address these challenges. The indigenous population should be recognized as equal citizens of Bangladesh and provided with all basic amenities to ensure they do not encounter difficulties.

However, state-led initiatives such as project-based population transfers implemented in the past should not be repeated, as these measures would likely lead to further contraction for them, exacerbating rather than alleviating their problems. In this context, the government should strive to improve the quality of life for the people living in the hills, ensuring they do not fall under the influence of any separatist or conspiratorial organizations.

We need to bring this issue to the attention of the international community through effective diplomacy. Furthermore, addressing the concerns of marginalized communities in this manner should be a fundamental principle of state policy, preventing the emergence of ethnic conflicts.
