INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

Youth driving the future of Bangladesh

Investing in youth isn’t just an opportunity -- it’s essential for a sustainable and prosperous future

Update : 12 Aug 2024, 08:45 AM

Bangladesh boasts a significant youth population, with approximately 46 million individuals aged 15-29, comprising nearly one fourth of the country’s total population (BBS). While the economic landscape evolves with consistent GDP growth averaging around 7%, the economy has been bolstered by an emerging technology sector, where the youth are making significant strides. The digital economy, currently valued at $3.5 billion is expected to reach $5bn by 2025.

Youth in Bangladesh are increasingly becoming digital natives, adept at levering technology for innovation and problem-solving. While the government has taken a number of initiatives, youth in most occasions did not get necessary support from the authorities to equip themselves for the rapidly changing digital world and competitive global market.

Moreover, youth unemployment remains a depressing challenge for the country. The 10.6% youth unemployment is significantly higher than the national average. This striking disparity underscores the need for targeted interventions to create growth, and foster economic inclusion for young people by improving the enabling environment for local and international investment.

The agricultural sector, a credible reliance for the Bangladeshi economy, offers huge potential to absorb the youth force. Agriculture accounts for about 13.6% of GDP and covers 40% of the national workforce. The sector can become more appealing to youth by incorporating modern technologies and innovative practices.

Smart farming, AI, machine learning, blockchain, precision agriculture, biotechnology, GMO and genome editing, along with the modernization of various avenues including agricultural entrepreneurship, can not only enhance productivity but also create sustainable employment and earnings for young people.

The world is closely observing Bangladesh for the political and social changes initiated and led by its youth. It’s our duty to support and align with their spirit and philosophy. Nourishing youth talents and equipping them with necessary resources can empower them to advance progress and foster innovation.

Change is in the air, and the youth of Bangladesh are at the forefront, driving it toward a better future. The opportunities we create and offer and the actions taken by the government for Gen-Z will shape the future of our country.

We want our youth to excel in professional skills, enabling them to lead our society with justice, equity and liberty in mind.

As we celebrate International Youth Day, let us acknowledge and support the contributions of our young people. Investing in the youth is not merely an option; it is imperative for the sustainable development of Bangladesh.

Invest in youth, they are changemakers of today and leaders of tomorrow.
