Update : 06 Jul 2024, 02:44 PM

We are writing this piece as a tribute to a remarkable leader, an inspiring mentor, and a pioneering scholar, Tasneem Siddiqui. After serving the University of Dhaka for 40 years, she is retiring. Tasneem Siddiqui is someone who has significantly shaped not only the Department of Political Science, but also the broader fields of political science and migration studies.

As current faculty and former students of Tasneem Siddiqui, we are very pleased to have the opportunity to witness her multi-faceted contributions up close. Tasneem Siddiqui is the daughter of renowned writer and poet Ashraf Siddiqui, a heritage that has undoubtedly influenced her intellectual pursuits and commitment to societal issues. She pursued her PhD in Australia and specializes in global migration, and has since become a leading expert in this field.

As the Founding Chair of the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), Bangladesh’s premier migration think-tank, Tasneem Siddiqui has been at the forefront of research and policy-advocacy. Her leadership has been instrumental in drafting key national policies, including the National Strategy for Internal Displacement in Bangladesh 2021, the National Action Plan 2022, the Overseas Employment Policy 2006, and the Migration Act 2013. Her scholarly work on climate change, disaster-related human mobility, adaptation, internal and international labour migration, and remittance is widely published and respected in both national and international journals.

Tasneem Siddiqui’s tenure as the Chairperson of the Department of Political Science at the University of Dhaka has been marked by numerous significant contributions. She has truly transformed the department, leaving a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. Understanding the importance of history and symbolism, Tasneem Siddiqui spearheaded the creation of a mural of Abul Barkat in the department. This mural serves as a powerful reminder of the contributions of the students of her department during the language movement, inspiring current and future generations to value and uphold the principles of activism and dedication.

Tasneem Siddiqui has also worked tirelessly to highlight the contributions of iconic professors within the department. By presenting their work and achievements to the students, she has ensured that the legacy of these scholars is preserved and that their contributions to Bangladesh are recognized and celebrated. This initiative has been incredibly motivating for our students, as it connects them to the rich history of our department and instills a sense of pride and aspiration.

One of the most impactful changes under Tasneem Siddiqui’s leadership has been the improvement of discipline in the examination system. She introduced a mid-term week, a structured period for assessments, which has brought much-needed order and consistency to the academic calendar. This initiative has not only streamlined the examination process but has also alleviated stress among students by providing a clear and organized schedule. One of her notable achievements is the digitization of the seminar library, a project that has greatly enhanced the accessibility and efficiency of our resources. This initiative has allowed students and faculty to engage with a wealth of information at their fingertips, fostering a more dynamic and interactive learning environment.

Tasneem Siddiqui's innovative spirit is evident in her organization of the first-ever young scholars’ seminar in our department. This platform has allowed emerging academicians and researchers to present their work to a larger audience, fostering a culture of academic inquiry and collaboration. The young scholars’ seminar has become a highlight of our academic year, showcasing the talent and potentials within our department and encouraging young researchers to pursue their scholarly ambitions with confidence.

In an effort to enhance the visibility of our department, Tasneem Siddiqui meticulously curated a collection of photographs depicting various activities of students and faculty. These images, displayed in the corridors, serve as a vibrant testament to the dynamic and engaged community within the Department of Political Science. This initiative has not only beautified our department but has also created a sense of belonging and pride among students and staff.

During her tenure as chairperson, two issues of Bangladesh Political Science Review (BPSR) have been published. Under her guidance, BPSR has become a reputable platform for scholarly discourse, featuring high-quality research from both established and emerging scholars. Her dedication to maintaining the academic rigor and integrity of the journal has significantly enhanced the reputation of our department.

She has always prioritized the voices and perspectives of students. In a groundbreaking initiative, she introduced the “Afternoon Tea with Chairman of the Department” sessions. These monthly meetings with class representatives have provided a valuable forum for students to express their concerns, share their ideas, and engage directly with the department’s leadership. This initiative has not only fostered open communication but has also demonstrated her commitment to creating a supportive and responsive academic environment.

What we admire most about Tasneem Siddiqui is her ability to inspire and engage with students. Her teaching style is energetic, innovative, and aesthetic, making each class a captivating and enriching experience. She has a unique talent for connecting with students, understanding their needs, and motivating them to reach their full potential.

Tasneem Siddiqui’s tenure as the Chairperson of the Department of Political Science has been marked by visionary leadership, innovative initiatives, and a deep commitment to academic excellence and student welfare. Despite facing numerous challenges, she has never wavered in her dedication to the department. Her ability to blend tradition with modernity, and her openness to new ideas and technological advancements, have made her an exemplary leader.

As we bid farewell to Tasneem Siddiqui from Dhaka University, we do so with deep gratitude and respect for her immense contributions. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we strive to uphold the high standards she has set. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours and look forward to seeing the continued impact of her work on the field of political science and migration studies.
