A call for a national consensus

Update : 12 Nov 2015, 06:29 PM

Our beloved country is undergoing a very challenging time at this moment.

We are at a crossroads, as two divergent forces -- the pro-liberation and the anti-liberation -- are trying to take the country in opposite directions.

The Awami League government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is working tirelessly to march forward, imbued in the spirit of 1971, in every sphere of our country. In this struggle to build a peaceful and prosperous country, she has to constantly engage in fighting against the anti-liberation forces.

The dreams of a Sonar Bangla were shattered to pieces with the brutal assassination of our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with almost all of his family members and four national leaders.

In the aftermath of the August 15 tragedy, there was a deliberate attempt to take our country in the opposite direction, and move away from the founding ideologies of our nation and the spirit of our Liberation War.

At present, the fact of the matter remains that anti-liberation and regressive forces are considerably powerful, therefore we must exercise caution in dealing with them. There is no scope for us to be driven only by raw emotion.

Our statements, actions, and decisions have to be taken with careful thought and consideration.

Making mistakes is not something we can afford at this critical juncture of our history.

To make a decision or to evaluate whether an action was right or wrong, it is imperative to know the factors associated with a specific issue.

The most informed person at this moment is none other than Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina -- her patriotism, commitment, dedication, and integrity go beyond any doubt.

We can remain assured that she has the best interests of our country and nation in her decision-making.

As soldiers of pro-71 politics, we must remain united under the pragmatic and visionary leadership of our commander-in-chief, Sheikh Hasina.

Though I believe in having space for constructive criticism, the need of the hour, in this demanding situation, is our undivided support for our commander-in-chief.

Please bear in mind that if some of us suffer from the delusion that we understand more or hold greater commitment than our leader and take a stance or act in a manner that eventually goes against her.

I am sorry to say that all we would be doing is playing into the hands of the anti-liberation forces.

This is a critical time in our struggle to realise Bangabandhu’s dreams.

We must not lose focus, weaken ourselves unnecessarily, and benefit our opponents using emotional rhetoric.

The pro-liberation, progressive, and secular forces must remain united under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at all cost.

Yes, I am talking about a national consensus, but this consensus should be based on the foundation of the spirit of our Liberation War.
