When it comes to rape, our legal system is stuck in the past.
Not only does an unhealthy environment permeate the courtrooms where rape victims are made to relive their trauma, the very legal framework surrounding the issue of rape is backward and regressive.
Rape victims are usually not allowed the privacy and security that they deserve, and are often subjected to mockery right in the courtroom.
Rape is a most serious crime that our judiciary needs to deal with, appropriately and efficiently.
What is most shocking, however, is that notions of rape in our legal system still rest solely on backward colonial laws which require immediate revision.
These laws allow the court to discuss the victim’s “moral character” -- an issue which has no bearing whatsoever on the crime committed.
This is not the way a civilised country should function.
It is high time we updated our legal system to protect victims of rape.
