Both sides must listen

It is time for both parties to heed the wishes of the Bangladeshi public

Update : 06 Sep 2023, 02:09 AM

It is completely unacceptable for both the government and BNP leaders to continue ratcheting up their political dispute.

Both sides share responsibility for the ongoing impasse. In continuing to confine BNP leaders and prevent the opposition party from holding a rally in the capital, the government provides the BNP with an excuse for its call for an indefinite blockade.

The damaging consequences of this unnecessary deadlock are clear for all to see. It is the very poorest people in the country who suffer most from the harm to daily life being caused by this dispute. People who rely for sustenance on daily wages and have been denied the opportunity to earn an income are hit the hardest.

Major industries have also been needlessly disrupted. Industrial production fell by nearly a half on Monday as workers were prevented from reaching factories, and the transport shortage prevented the delivery of raw materials to garment factories.

Likewise, banks and businesses have all reported large falls in activity. The lack of political resolution is hugely damaging for the future of the economy, which needs stability to sustain and build on the progress it has been making.

Both sides need to listen to the public and act promptly to resolve matters.

The country cannot afford to risk further political turmoil and unrest. The government must heed the many calls being made by business leaders to act constructively to bring about a long-term resolution to this damaging crisis. The BNP too must play its part.

It is time for both parties to heed the wishes of the Bangladeshi public.
