Make sure unions are legit

Update : 28 Jun 2014, 06:15 PM

It is a matter of concern that most of the recently registered RMG trade unions of the country are affiliated with a single US-based NGO, Solidarity Centre. Furthermore, close to 20 leaders of those RMG federations were controlling the entire sector.

We should bear in mind that a foreign group will ultimately work to serve the interests of its own country. The interests of American workers – and the bodies that represent those interests – may not be aligned with those of Bangladesh.

We acknowledge the need for trade and labour unions – legitimate unions can be a force for good. However, there is a danger here – Solidarity Centre is not accountable to anyone in Bangladesh.

Unions are an important part of our society. We want them to negotiate with employers and ensure that workers are fairly treated. It is a matter of great concern if they answer to a foreign organisation with motives that do not align with our national interests. For example, if a union member affiliated with Solidarity Centre engages in vandalism, there may not be an easy way to hold the body accountable.

To have questions about the legitimacy, operation, and accountability of unions is good. We must see to it that unions go through due process and gain registration through our Department of Labour, without undue influence of foreign interest groups.
