Every time it rains, the streets of Dhaka become the stuff of nightmares.
And it is about time that this stopped.
We have mentioned before that the drainage system of this city needs a massive overhaul.
On top of that, the authorities need to free up the naturally existing water bodies which inhabit Dhaka.
Two research organisations have already suggested solutions and advised on the steps that need to be taken to free up water flow, and it is high time that these solutions were implemented to their fullest extent.
A crucial part of this process would be to ban development activities which impact water bodies.
They are a natural part of Dhaka’s topography, and they need to stay that way.
A city underwater is not a city that people can live in.
