Attacking journalists is an attack on press freedom itself

Bangladesh cannot claim to uphold democratic values while journalists are beaten for doing their jobs and law enforcement retreats in the face of political violence

Update : 06 Oct 2026, 11:45 AM
The recent attack at Rajshahi University that left at least 10 people, including four journalists, injured is absolutely unacceptable.
The fact Chhatra Dal activists allegedly attacked journalists while they were carrying out their professional duties, with some reportedly threatened with death, makes the incident all the more alarming.
There can be no justification for political activists resorting to violence, particularly on a university campus that should be a safe space for students, teachers, and journalists.
Attacking journalists is also an attack on press freedom itself; reporters must be able to document events, including political activity and conflict, without fearing physical assault or intimidation.
What is equally disturbing is the apparent failure of the authorities to prevent the violence or bring it under control. The university proctor has admitted that the administration failed to control the situation. More seriously, he said police were called but allegedly fled the scene in fear.
This raises a fundamental question: If police cannot protect journalists in a situation involving armed political activists, who is expected to protect ordinary citizens?
Law enforcement agencies cannot pick and choose when to enforce the law. Their responsibility is precisely greatest when violence threatens to spiral out of control.
There must be a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, with every individual responsible for the attacks identified and prosecuted. This kind of political disorder and use of weapons on a university campus must not be treated as routine.
At the same time, the conduct of the police must be investigated. If officers genuinely abandoned the scene out of fear, that failure cannot simply be overlooked. Police must have the capacity, training, and institutional backing to confront violence and protect citizens.
Bangladesh cannot claim to uphold democratic values while journalists are beaten for doing their jobs and law enforcement retreats in the face of political violence.
This incident demands condemnation, accountability and, above all, a clear message that such impunity will not be tolerated.
