Today, we observe World Teachers’ Day under Unesco’s global call to value teacher voices and transform education. For Bangladesh, this day must be looked at as a moment of collective reflection when it comes to education, and how we support educators across all levels.
Any education system is only as strong as its educators. Yet for decades, our classrooms have suffered from chronic underfunding, politicization, and systemic administrative neglect.
If we are to build an equitable, knowledge-driven society, empowering and supporting our teachers must become the bedrock of national policy.
This starts with having an adequate budget for the sector as a whole, something we have struggled with as a nation.
When yearly budgets allocate insufficient funds for education, it signals to the rest of the country that it is a sector not worth investing in, despite the lofty claims of it being the backbone of a nation. The present government has rightfully been commended for increasing the allocation, but having more money is only the first step.
For teachers, the lack of continuous, high-quality pedagogical training and modern digital tools also remain barriers, and it is students who suffer as a result.
Furthermore, the persistent practice of politicizing teacher recruitment, promotions, and school governing bodies has eroded academic meritocracy, discouraging passionate talent from entering the profession.
Rote learning, outdated syllabi, and severe disparities in learning outcomes between urban and rural areas continue to leave millions of students unprepared for the demands of a globalized economy, and it is good teachers who will be able to begin fixing these deep-rooted issues.
Restoring the integrity of our education system requires treating teachers not as administrative instruments but as essential architects of our nation’s future.
As such, instituting comprehensive structural reforms and ensuring the continuous investment in our educators is among the most vital investments in our nation’s potential. Let this day serve as a firm commitment to give our teachers the dignity, resources, and respect they truly deserve.
