The government moving to bring e-rickshaws under a policy framework, with systematic licensing and registration planned through local government, is unquestionably a positive development - on paper.
However, Bangladesh has heard this promise before.
For some time now, authorities have announced plans to register, regulate, and reorganize these vehicles, only for the initiatives to stall, fade, or be quietly abandoned.
This time, the country needs more than statements. It needs implementation.
E‑rickshaws are now an essential part of Bangladesh’s transport ecosystem and play a significant role in providing affordable mobility in addition to creating livelihoods for hundreds of thousands. None of this has ever been disputed.
Yet, their rapid, unregulated growth coupled with their high-risk has also created serious problems. Untrained drivers should never have been allowed to operate these vehicles, and it is no wonder that Dhaka has seen increased traffic chaos and more frequent accidents.
Without proper oversight, a mode of transport that should help communities has unfortunately ended up putting them at risk, not to mention worsen our traffic woes.
The government’s renewed commitment to registration, route management, and safety standards is therefore welcome - but credibility depends entirely on follow‑through.
We expect the government to realize why past attempts failed and not give in to coercion from vested interests resisting change. Unless these structural issues are addressed, this latest initiative will meet the same fate.
Bangladesh cannot afford another cycle of announcements without action. E‑rickshaws are here to stay and the goal now is to transform them from the source of disorder they are today to becoming a safe, integrated part of the transport system.
