Addressing the cost of living

Affordability must be treated as a core pillar of economic policy

Update : 14 Aug 2026, 09:00 AM

While the latest data may show inflation is easing, which is certainly welcome, it does not change the reality facing most Bangladeshi households. Prices of most essentials remain stubbornly high, and families continue to struggle with the cost of living.

When inflation cools on paper but daily expenses do not, it signals a deeper problem: The benefits of macro‑level stability are not reaching ordinary citizens.

As such, official indicators may improve, but our markets remain volatile, supply chains inconsistent, and enforcement weak. The result is a persistent gap between economic data and lived experience - and it is the lived experience of the everyday Bangladeshi that must be the primary concern.

The government’s efforts to stabilize prices are important, but they must be sustained and strengthened. It is only when our markets function transparently, when middlemen cannot manipulate supply, and when essential goods move efficiently from producers to consumers, will we begin to see progress on this front, but this must be the challenge the authorities concerned undertake.

Most important is protecting vulnerable households; social safety nets must be responsive to real‑time market conditions, not outdated assumptions, with support adjusting based on prices.

Inflation easing is good news, but it is not enough when families continue to struggle. What matters is whether families can afford rice, lentils, vegetables, fuel, and transport without sacrificing other essentials.

Affordability must be treated as a core pillar of economic policy. For a country where millions rely on fixed or low incomes, affordability determines nutrition, health, education, and overall well‑being.

Bangladesh’s households deserve more than encouraging statistics. If we are serious about progress as a nation, then nothing is more important than ensuring affordability for the masses.
