Rights remain elusive for workers

The strength of Bangladesh lies in its workers and to honour them is to ensure that their rights are respected

Update : 01 May 2026, 01:36 PM

Today, Bangladesh joins the world in observing International Workers’ Day, a day meant to honour the labour that sustains our economy, the millions of workers whose sweat and sacrifices keep industries running and our towns, cities, and villages alive.

Yet for our nation, this day must also serve as a sobering reminder of how far we still have to go in ensuring dignity, rights, and security for our workforce.

From garment workers to day labourers, from domestic workers to those in the informal economy, and even many prestigious white collar jobs across different industries, exploitation remains widespread.

From inadequate wages that do not reflect the realities of today to inconsistent safety standards, rights that ought to be a given are routinely ignored. Despite tragedies such as the Rana Plaza collapse, too many workers in too many industries still face unsafe conditions and little recourse when those conditions fail them.

Present external shocks such as the war in Iran have shown how vulnerable our workers are. Without social protection, without healthcare, without secure contracts, they bear the brunt of every crisis. This is unsustainable. A nation cannot claim resilience if its workers remain unprotected.

Bangladesh must confront the uncomfortable reality that its economic growth has been built on the backs of workers who remain undervalued. Reforms - be they stronger enforcement of safety standards, wage protection, and timely payments - are essential if workers are truly to be partners in progress rather than expendable resources.

Bangladesh must invest in its workforce, not only through fair wages and safe workplaces, but through education, healthcare, and social security. The strength of Bangladesh lies in its workers and to honour them is to ensure that their rights are respected, their dignity upheld, and their future secured.
