It may be stating the obvious, but the reason people elect their governments is so that they can use taxpayer money for the benefit of the whole nation. The government is duty bound to the citizens of the state and its responsibilities, among many, include infrastructural developments like the building of roads and bridges.
We do not intend to be overly critical of the government unless it is absolutely necessary, but at the very least we expect that the personnel, who constitute the government, including the head of the state, are at least aware of what they are supposed to do. Otherwise, we have a duty to remind them of what their responsibilities are, and that the elevated rights they enjoy simply follow the responsibilities they are yet to fulfil.
The honourable prime minister, speaking while she inaugurated the Mayor Mohammad Hanif flyover, said that this facility is an Eid gift for the Dhakites.
Two months ago, she insinuated that the Kuril flyover was an Eid-ul-Fitr gift for the people as well.
Now, her statement gives us the impression that the people of Bangladesh have no rights or expectations from the government, the government on the other hand, has no obligations or duty to fulfil towards the people and the development works the have been accomplished with taxpayer’s money are something that the people should be grateful to the government for.
This series of statements from the leader of our nation paints an unfortunate picture for her political philosophy. We would have preferred if she had not looked upon her responsibilities as favours to the people whose votes elected her to the job she holds.
