An undeniable legacy

Mujib’s vision for a free Bangladesh was undeniable, and his later missteps only underscore the difficulty of nation-building and safeguarding democratic ideals

March 17 marked the birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and is a day of remembrance for the Father of the Nation. His leadership throughout his life, and his ability to inspire this nation, especially leading up to and during our Liberation War of 1971, can never be forgotten, and remains Bangladesh’s defining moment.

For a land and a people that had been deprived of its rights, Mujib gave voice and demonstrated that dignity was a right, and it was his courage and vision that laid the foundation for independence.

However, a balanced reflection requires honesty about the complexities of his rule. Post‑1971, Mujib faced the monumental task of rebuilding a war‑ravaged country. In that context, some of his decisions -- most notably Baksal in 1975 -- remain deeply controversial and deserve the scrutiny and criticism that have arisen over the years.

While many try to dismiss or diminish his role in the creation of Bangladesh, especially as a result of his post-1971 time, it is important to remember that even great leaders are fallible and human, and their legacies must be examined with nuance.

Whatever one’s political stance, violence against the memory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman itself must be condemned. To that end, the attack on his residence remains among the darkest chapters in our recent history. Anger at a political party, however justified, cannot be an excuse for such actions.

Mujib’s vision for a free Bangladesh was undeniable, and his later missteps only underscore the difficulty of nation-building and safeguarding democratic ideals. Ultimately, his legacy and his contribution to our nation means that he has earned respect and gratitude. One thing is undeniable: There is no Bangladesh without Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
