Supporting start-ups through setbacks

Bangladesh needs to become serious about diversifying its economy and reducing reliance on traditional industries

Update : 11 Mar 2026, 10:31 AM

There is no questioning the fact that our start-up ecosystem has grown significantly in recent years, driven by ambition, technological innovation, and the promise of solving many of the problems our country faces.

However, as reported in this newspaper, many of these dreams are hitting reality checks. From funding shortages to regulatory hurdles, the environment remains far from ideal for nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs.

It is important for the concerned authorities to recognize the value of start-ups as not just businesses but also potential engines of innovation and job creation, bringing fresh ideas to myriad sectors ranging from fintech to agriculture.

Start-ups have long held the potential to transform the economy but without the right support, most fail before they can scale. As such, the government must recognize that fostering start-ups is no luxury but rather a forward-thinking approach for long‑term growth.

For that to become a reality, however, requires the right environment - which must go beyond mere rhetoric. It requires access to financing, simplified regulations, and infrastructure that allows start-ups to thrive.

It also means giving entrepreneurs the tools to navigate the challenges ever-present in our country, including the all-too-familiar issues with bureaucratic red tape and other barriers to business. Without policies that encourage risk-taking rather than punishing it, our desire for innovation will never reach the next step.

Bangladesh needs to become serious about diversifying its economy and reducing reliance on traditional industries - and start-ups are a way to do that but only if we begin to give them the priority they require. Their promise is immense but promise alone will not sustain growth.

We need the government, private sector, and investors working together to create a start-up ecosystem where innovation is rewarded and ambition is not crushed by obstacles.
